This Removal Action is within Operable Unit (OU) 2 of the Newton County Mine Tailings Superfund site on the National Priorities List. The site encompasses all of Newton County, Missouri, where historic lead mining activities have impacted surface soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater. This Removal Action addresses impacts to drinking water.
Private drinking water well sampling conducted by the Remedial Program and by the Newton County Health Department have identified domestic wells impacted by lead and/or cadmium above a level of concern. Properties were initially referred in June 2018 and a Removal Action was started to provide alternative drinking water. Sampling has continued since that time and additional impacted wells have been identified and referred for action.
The Removal Action includes initial distribution of bottled water followed by installation of filtration units. Following system installation, confirmation sampling is conducted to confirm the filter system is operating appropriately to remove contaminants. Property owners are then provided five years of replacement filter media.
The Removal Action is ongoing and EPA is continuing to address impacted drinking water wells at the site.
