On July 8, 2024, ten abandoned containers containing an unknown liquid were discovered on a street corner in a residential area of the city of St. Louis. Due to the volatile nature of the contents reported by the St. Louis City Fire Department (STLFD), the containers were relocated from the sidewalk to a fire station parking lot. Further field screening conducted by the STLFD Hazmat Team Engine House 28 identified CERCLA hazardous substances in the abandoned containers. A request for federal action (RFA) was submitted by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) on July 17 to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7.

On July 18, EPA Region 7 On-Scene Coordinators (OSCs) stablized the containers in new overpack containers and samples were sent off for analysis and profiling. On August 14, all liquid and solid wastes were delivered to a fuel-blending facility for treatment and disposal.

This response is completed and no further EPA actions are warranted at this time. All liquid and solid wastes have been disposed of, and site conditions have returned to pre-incident conditions. There was no release to the environment and no waterways were impacted.
