The Newton County Mine Tailings Superfund site, listed on the National Priorities List site, encompasses all of Newton County, Missouri, where historical lead mining activities have impacted surface soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater. This time-critical removal action was completed in January 2024 and addressed surface soil contamination at eight residential properties.
The time-critical removal action took place within Operable Unit 2 of the Site and addressed residential properties referred to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MDHSS).
The objective of the Removal Action was to reduce the risk and/or prevent the exposure of sensitive populations through inhalation, dermal contact, and/or ingestion to lead and/or other heavy metals present in surface soil at the Site.
The Removal Action involved the excavation and off property transportation of approximately 2,550 cubic yards of lead-contaminated soil exceeding the cleanup level of 200 parts per million. A separate Removal Action is planned for 2025 to address additional residential properties referred in 2025.
