On June 10, 2025 at 12:30 AM, the EPA was notified by the
National Response Center (NRC) of a train derailment involving 16 tank cars in
Waxahachie, Texas. The tank cars are owned by Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and
each tank car contains 30,000 gallons of alcohols, not otherwise
specified. At the time of the report, 14 of the tank cars were on
their side with no release of contaminants. UP has restored the 14 tank
cars to an upright position, with 10 tank cars currently transported off-site
by rail. The contents are being properly removed and disposed from the
remaining six tank cars on-site. Following the removal of the contents of the
six tank cars via flatbed trailers, they will be transported off-site for proper disposal. The removal of the tank cars is estimated to be completed on June 17, 2025. The cause of the derailment is unknown at this time.
The Texas Commission of Environmental Quality is monitoring
the situation. US Department of Transportation, Ellis County Emergency
Management, Ellis County Fire Department, Texas State Troopers, Waxahachie Fire
Department, Waxahachie Police Department, Texas Department of Emergency
Management, and Texas Department of Transportation are on-scene.
EPA personnel were activated to monitor response efforts and
are coordinating with state and local response partners. EPA conducted air
monitoring during cleanup operations and did not detect Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOCs).
