On June 10, 2025 at 12:30 AM, the EPA was notified by the National Response Center (NRC) of a train derailment involving 16 tank cars in Waxahachie, Texas. The tank cars are owned by Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and each tank car contains 30,000 gallons of alcohols, not otherwise specified.  At the time of the report, 14 of the tank cars were on their side with no release of contaminants. UP has restored the 14 tank cars to an upright position, with 10 tank cars currently transported off-site by rail. The contents are being properly removed and disposed from the remaining six tank cars on-site. Following the removal of the contents of the six tank cars via flatbed trailers, they will be transported off-site for proper disposal. The removal of the tank cars is estimated to be completed on June 17, 2025. The cause of the derailment is unknown at this time.

The Texas Commission of Environmental Quality is monitoring the situation. US Department of Transportation, Ellis County Emergency Management, Ellis County Fire Department, Texas State Troopers, Waxahachie Fire Department, Waxahachie Police Department, Texas Department of Emergency Management, and Texas Department of Transportation are on-scene.

EPA personnel were activated to monitor response efforts and are coordinating with state and local response partners. EPA conducted air monitoring during cleanup operations and did not detect Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
